I have the results of the last poll. (I didn't vote this time!) This time 9 people voted and that is 2 more than last time! Yay! So here goes:
Who do you feel most comfortable lying to?
3 of you said family
6 of you said strangers
and surprisingly none of you said friends.
That really says something about us as people. It's almost like the love from family is unconditional and never-ending so maybe people don't feel as bad lying to them about certain things because you know they will always be there for you. And strangers get lied to because you don't feel bad for being dishonest if you're never going to see them again.
Hmmm...interesting.
Sorry about the short post. That's all for today though. A new poll will be available to vote on shortly.
Oh and I have a question that I would like people to ruminate over:
Why do you think people lie? When is it ok to lie? Where does the need to lie stem from?
Ok so that was more than one question, but seriously what do you think? leave me some feedback and I'll compile it onto the next blog post.
See ya!

Of course we don't lie to friends. If we have to lie to them, why would we be friends?
ReplyDeleteI think we lie to family because they tend to be more judgmental and believe they know what is best for us. So, we lie to keep the peace--we don't want them to be unhappy with us and we know they will be around.
I think it is much easier to be honest with strangers because their judgment or opinions don't necessarily matter.
I think people lie because they are so eager to please everyone or impress someone. Whether the lie is to cover up an ugly truth or is simply made up to make their lives sound a little more exciting, some people are just not happy enough with the lives they are living and are probably trying to convince themselves of the non-truth rather than others - more or less. It could be something as simple as saying they brushed their teeth when, in reality, the haven't. But at the same time, it could be something ginormous and could get them in trouble with the government, something like fraud.
ReplyDeleteAs far as when it is ok to lie, I'm not sure I have a definite answer for that. I try not to lie as much as possible. You mentioned in an earlier blog that sarcasm is sometimes considered a form of lying. I think as far as that goes, as long as it is in the appropiate place and time, that kind of lying is ok because most people can tell when someone is making sarcastic remarks. There is also the occasional white lie. These are seen as socially acceptable, but I don't see the point in lying about something that is not really a huge deal in the first place. So, I suppose the point I am getting at is that it usually is not ok to lie. There is the occassional time and place for a little slip or sarcastic remark, but overall, most people in societies around the world look down upon lying in general.
Unless you look at it from a mental illness point of view. People that are pathological liars can't really help what they are doing, according to some opinions, but the lying is still frowned upon. But I think that is a whole other issue. Maybe you can look into that as a blog topic....
IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLAIN OL' LYING AND LYING BECAUSE OF A MENTAL DISORDER?
Why do you think people lie?
ReplyDeleteI think people lie out of fear, uncertainty, self gain, and lack of self esteem.
When is it okay to lie?
It's okay to lie when you are trying to acquire security/safety in a given situation.
Where does the need to lie stem from?
Human nature.
I also lie out of boredom. Sometimes the truth is just too dull. I never think of it as lying, I always think of it as pretending or drama. You can go on a trip, use a fake accent, make up a reason for the trip and create an entire persona...and it is all just for fun because you know you will never see these people again.
